Setting up an NT 4.0 server.

These are instruction on setting up an NT server

Pre Install Questions

What kind of partition Scheme will you use? See partition worksheet.

Name of a contact.

Name of the organization.

CD Key

Licensing Mode

Server Name

Server type PDC, BDC or stand alone.

Know What kind of nic card you have and the Location of the driver on the floppy.

What protocol you will be running.

If you are running TCPIP know what settings you will use.

Know what time zone you are in and have the time avialable.

Pre Install Requirements

Network Interface Card Drivers

 

  1. Acquire or create the 3 NT Server Boot Disks
  2. Insure that there is no CD in the Computer.
  3. Turn off the computer and boot off of the First Disk.
  4. It’ll start up then ask for the 2nd disk. Insert it and press Enter to continue
  5. After a while you’ll get to a "Welcome to Setup" screen. Press Enter to Continue.
  6. Next Screen should ask if you want to search for Mass storage devices. Press Enter for OK.
  7. Next Screen will prompt you for the 3rd Disk. Insert the 3rd Disk and press Enter.
  8. This will take several minutes but it’ll go through and search for any mass storage devices (Hard Disks and CD ROMs).
  9. Its usually good at it, so accept whatever the install program finds.
  10. A screen will prompt you for the NT Server CD. Insert it and press enter.
  11. The license agreement will pop up. Press page down till you get to the bottom, when your at the bottom you will be able to press F8 to agree and continue.
  12. A list of detected settings will appear, agree to it by pressing enter, you can always change it later.
  13. The next screen will direct you which partition you can put it in. If NT is the Only OS you are installing then Clear out all of the partitions (Note: Press ‘D’ then ‘L’ to remove the partitions.) Once you have no partitions defined we recommend creating the following a separate partition for Windows NT. Your partition scheme should define how you set these drives up. During this first part you need only define the first partition. The others can be created later.
  14. After your selection it’ll format your partition.
  15. When formatting is done, select the directory NT will go under. Normally it’ll go under \WINNT
  16. It’ll now request to scan the drive for corruption. Press enter to go ahead with it.
  17. After the scan is done it’ll automatically begin copying files to your hard disk.
  18. After the copy is done, you’ll be prompted to remove all floppies and CD ROMS from the computer. Do this then press enter to reboot.
  19. After the reboot it’ll come to point where it asks for the CDRom Insert it and press OK to continue. Notice that you are now in Graphical mode.
  20. It’ll run through 3 steps. Gathering information, installing networking, and Finishing the setup. Click next to begin the first step.
  21. Enter the name and organization as listed in the section above. Hit Next
  22. Enter in CD Key. Hit Next.
  23. Select your licensing mode. Per seat is OK. Hit Next.
  24. Next select the Unique name that this computer will be on your network. Hit Next.
  25. Select what type of server this will be. (Choose carefully this can not easily be undone, officially it can’t but there are ways). Hit Next.
  26. Select an administrator password. Write it down and keep it safe. Hit next.
  27. Its not necessary to create an emergency repair disk at this time. Select no and hit next.
  28. Select the components you want to install. You can always install and uninstall these options later. Hit Next.
  29. You will now begin to install NT Networking. Hit next.
  30. Since this is a server odds are this will be connected to a network. Select wired to network. Hit next
  31. It is not necessary to install internet information server. Uncheck the box and hit next.
  32. Next screen is a dialog box for the Network card. You may attempt to have it search for the type of Nic card you have although it is more reliable to provide the disk that these drivers are on. Click Select from List, If your NIC card appears in the list you can choose that one otherwise select have disk and enter in the location where your drivers are located at. If you have the driver on floppy normally it would be on A:\.
  33. Once you have the proper nic driver listed hit next.
  34. Three network protocols will appear which you can use. TCPIP, IPX, and NetBeui. TCPIP is the most popular and this is what the Internet Relies on. NetBeui is faster and good for small networks, IPX is for systems that have Novell servers. You can select all, but its better if you just choose 1 protocol, Click next when done.
  35. Next dialog box is to select what services you need to install on this machine. You don’t have to choose any more now, you can always add to this list later. Press Next
  36. Press Next Again.
  37. You might now be prompted to insert the disk with the NT drivers.Go ahead and insert the disks it asks for.
  38. If you selected TCPIP (wise choice) then you will be prompted if you are using a DHCP server. Answer yes or no based on your answers above.
  39. If you answered no then you will be prompted to enter in all of your TCPIP information. Enter in those properties and select next to continue.
  40. After you done hit next twice to start the networking services.
  41. If you choose stand alone as your server, you’ll be prompted to enter in the domain if it will participate in a domain.
  42. In order for this server to participate in a domain, have the administrator create an account in the domain if necessary, otherwise you can add it now if you have the administrator rights in the network.
  43. Afterwards you can select next for the final setup.
  44. In the drop down box select the time zone you are in and go to the other page to set the time. Hit next.
  45. Accept whatever video display it recommends, you can change it later. Hit OK
  46. Hit Next.
  47. It’ll copy some final files.
  48. After its done copying, remove all CD’s and Disks from the computer and reboot the machine.
  49. Done you should have Windows NT installed.
  50. NOTE: It is highly recommended you install a service pack. The latest one as of this writing is 6 but 5 is recommended.
